Preparing For an Obstacle Course Race

Ahhh! Warmer weather is upon us once again! This means so many things! Traveling, beaches, hiking, fishing, outdoor exercising, races, camping and so much more! Another favorite: Obstacle Course races! Here are a few tips and tricks to help you prepare for them, When training for a race, it’s important to know how long the event is, what distance it is and what types of obstacles you’ll face. You can train for the changing intervals by using a HIIT workout as cardio prep. Hiking and running on an incline are also great prep work decisions! You could even do some cross training adding in some rock climbing and functional fitness!

With all that being said, here are some things to keep in mind for race day: Be sure to wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing, that is tight fitted (Loose clothes will only hinder your performance). As far as footwear, you could invest in some shoes specially made for these type of races, or use a shoe you own with good grip that you’re willing to get dirty! Be sure they are lightweight and won’t retain water. Some other items that you might find useful are a bandana, sunglasses and fingerless gloves to help with grip. Don’t forget the importance of hydration! We lose so much when sweating, it is important to replenish those liquids! Have a blast! Take pictures and we can share in your accomplishment! And remember, if your body says you need to rest a minute, it’s okay to walk a bit!
